  1. Merle Robert Travis was an American country and western singer, songwriter, and guitarist born in Rosewood, Kentucky, United States. His songs' lyrics often discussed both the lives and the economic exploitation of American coal miners. Among his many well-known songs are "Sixteen Tons," "Re-Enlistment Blues," "I am a Pilgrim," and "Dark as a Dungeon." However, it is his unique guitar style.
  2. Merle Robert Travis was born on the November 29th, in the small town of Rosewood, KY. His father was a career coal miner, and Travis lived on the brink of poverty. Young Merle became interested in music at an early age, getting his hands on a guitar when he was still a kid. He was heavily influenced by Arnold Shultz, a popular blues guitar player, who helped Travis develop his offbeat.

Travis graced this world with his presence on January 28, He was the youngest of five children born to Alice Arnold and Kenneth Arnold, Sr. Travis.
